Diary Nov 26

1942 – Thanksgiving – Marie ate with us. I washed yesterday Dad slept Till Noon Bill came Down & woke Dad He Doesnt go out Tonight We went to see Bambi.

1943 – Dad slept till Noon Went in at 1 & got My Hair set & Dads hair cut. Marie came Dad took her home & I am alone!!

1944 – No entry

1945 – No entry

1946 – No entry

I love that she reports that they went to see Bambi in the 1942 entry. It was originally released on August 13th of that year. I love the image of the two of them sitting in the movie theater watching a movie that I loved as a child.

I wonder why she made a point of her being alone in the 1943 entry? Her children are grown and her husband works. Something else must be going on.

Diary Nov 25

1942 – Dad worked M. Tour & came in & ate went back out & worked all Day Came in 4 slept 4 hrs & went back out again.

1943 – Thanksgiving. Daddy worked slept all Day. Marie worked & she & Mable came at 5 & we had chicken Dinner in tralor at Caso Blavens (?)

1943 – Caso Blavens? That’s all I could get out of the handwriting. I can’t believe that is correct.

1942 – Dad slept Today Marie came out & we took her Back No Mail from Bud wonder how He is.

1943 – Dad slept Today we went into Town & got Mail & Groc. & then tonight we took Marie home.

1944 – No entry

It appears that in 1942 Bud is living far enough away that they communicate by mail and Marie is living close enough to drive her to and from her place of residence.

Diary Nov 23

1942 – Dad slept all Day Marie came out we took her back & went out & Blew out Dads Clothes He went out morning tour.

1943 – Logans came back last night in time to go out to work. Marie didn’t come by.

I don’t know what she meant by “blew out dad’s clothes” in the 1942 entry. If anyone has an idea or sees a better transcription from the diary let me know. Tip: don’t google it.

1942 – Dad had his examination He worked 16 hrs last night Vern left. Bill sick Roy set up to Drilling. Gils ate (?) & we went to show.

1942 – Sat. got check 266.56 went up to Bank Roy & Johnie Both Drunk Dad went out afternoon tour. I went up Town with Marie.

1943 – Sunday Logans left about noon Dad slept till 4 we ate went after mail – Came home He got out at 12 tonight

This is a picture of my mother, Sylvia Marie Tennant Stevens, who is pregnant with my brother, Robert Burl, who would be born in June of this same year and my sister Barbara Marie (on the right) and myself. The following is the note my father wrote on the back of the picture:

“Mommy had just shown us these. Just in from Sunday School.

Isn’t their hair long? They sure were proud of their dresses. Never saw two kids more interested in clothes.”
