#8 William Thadios Tennant is my great grandfather, my maternal grandfather’s father. He was born 21 February 1874, exactly 74 years before I was born. He was born in Monongalia, West Virginia. His family had been there long before West Virginia was a state. By the time he was six the family had moved to Iowa and then, in the 1910 Federal Census, he shows up in Oklahoma at the age of 36 where he fathered four children and lived out his life.

W.T. Tennant Dies

W.T. Tennant died at his home Sunday morning, October 31, at the age of 61 years, following a long illness.

Funeral services were conducted at the home Monday afternoon by the Rev. W.H. Bickers of Vinita, after which the body was laid to rest in the Raulston Cemetery, near Bernice under the direction of the Burckhalter Funeral Home.

Mr. Tennant was an old time resident of this county, having lived 36 years in the Success District. He left as survivors a widow, a son, Obry, living in Taft, Colorado, two sons, Ethmer and William of Vinita, and a daughter, Mrs. Harvey Peetom of Vinita.

W.T. Tennant was born this week in 1874, on 21 February, to be exact, which is also my birthday. He was my great grandfather, the father of my grandfather, Robert Aubrey Tennant, erroneously listed as Obry in this obituary. Robert Aubrey is also erroneously listed as living in Taft, Colorado at the time of his father’s death when he was actually living in Taft, California.

Grandma talks about sprinkling her clothes in her 1943 entry. In those days, they sprinkled the clothes and wrapped them up tightly so the moisture would evenly penetrate the cloth. Then when they ironed, the job was much easier. You just needed to wait a few hours or overnight at most. Many is the woman who forgot her clothes and remembered them only in time to find them mildewed.

I wonder what my grandfather registered for in 1942? Could it have been the draft? She seems so matter of fact about it. He would have been 41 at this time so perhaps they weren’t too worried about him being called up.

The 1942 entry about getting candy from Bud was sweet. She continued getting candy on Valentines day from Bud her entire life. When she passed we found many empty valentines candy boxes in her closet. She must have saved them because they were so pretty.
