1945 We are looking for a telegram from Bud. Marie came by Daddy is sleeping I had my hair fixed.

1946 No entry

The 1942 entry is interesting. They must own two places somewhere else, probably Taft. I’ll have to do more research on where 306 and 308 are.

They were looking for the telegram in 1945 from Bud to say he was married. They must have all been very excited.

52 Ancestors 52 Weeks

I don’t have anyone in my Tree that was born in this week so I’ll just talk about someone I’m currently working on, my grandmother, Martha Marie Wright Tennant. She was born in 1901 in Indiana. I have a small composition book that she had from Prairie Chapel School near Vinita, Oklahoma. I thought I’d share one of the stories she wrote down in her little book.

The Ant and the Dove

One hot day an ant went down to a brook to krink; but Poor thing! it fell into the watter. A Dove saw it, and dropped a branch into the stream. The little ant clung to the branch, and so it got safe to land. To or three days after, the ant saw a man put up his gun to shoot the poor dove. The ant crep up and bit the man in the heal. The gun went off, but the dove was not hurt.

I wonder how old she was at this time. The composition book gives no clue.

Here is a copy of the ration stamps mentioned in the 1943 entry. You can clearly see stamp No. 17 in row 5 on the left. The rationing of shoes would have been of concern to most people. Sears sold shoes in their catalogs and to assure their customers that they could still buy shoes from them by mail, they came out with this information in the 1943 Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog. “Simply detach War Ration Stamp No. 17 from your War Ration Book No. 1 (sugar and coffee book) and pin it to your order.”

Lemoore Army Air Field, mentioned in the 1945 entry, was located nine miles southwest of Lemoore, California. It was built during World War 2 as an Army Air Forces training field. According to a World War II-era diagram, the field consisted of a roughly triangular shaped dirt landing mat, which measured 3,470′ along its longest side. A 3,700′ long north/south apron sat to the southwest of the landing mat, and west of the apron was the building area. Lemoore AAF was described by the 1944 US Army/Navy Directory of Airfields as having a 6,500′ hard-surface runway, although the remarks included, “Entire field available only when dry.”

The Newhall Ranch grama is talking about in 1942 is interesting. It was a huge ranch in the Santa Clarita valley of California that the Newhall brothers owned at this time. Their dad had bought up several  former Mexican land grants. He was quite successful at ranching. He granted the Southern Pacific Railroad a right of way and the first railroad tracks connecting the San Francisco area with Los Angeles were laid across his ranch.  He had instructed his sons not to sell off the land when he died but 143,000 acres of ranch land was apparently not enough to support all five sons and their families in the lifestyle to which they had become accustomed. They began to sell off parts and soon realized that they couldn’t do that indefinitely. They then started selling off unproductive land and investing it right back into land for agriculture. They also struck oil in 1937 which helped a lot. The city of Valencia California occupies a small part of the old Newhall ranch now. Valencia, Saugus, Newhall, and Canyon Country merged in 1987 to form Santa Clarita.

1946 – No entry

1945 entry is sad again. I don’t know if I’ve explained before this but Dutch was my grandfather’s nickname. $200 was a lot of money in those days. ($2,597.40 in 2013 dollars) The cops are obvious but I wonder where the doctor came into it.
