Stevens – HB Stevens Home From The War

scan0011

This is my father, Henry Burl Stevens, and his mother, Georgia Mary Coakley Stevens. Dad was just home on 30 day leave upon his return from Europe after the war in 1945. All three of Georgia’s boys served in the military during WWII. I’m sure they were feeling blessed that all three came home alive and well.

Stevens – Small World – Cary Stevens

My husband, Jack, is researching his family at the same time that I’m researching mine. He has just found that his grandfather, Robert Henry Wormworth, was in the Spanish American War serving in the Phillipines in 1900. My great-grandfather, Cary Stevens was also in the Spanish American War serving in the Phillipines in 1900! It is a small world we live in.

Stevens – Why didn’t Cary Stevens and Minnie Blanche Shipp raise Henry Burl Sr. ?

Carrie Stevens and Minnie Bell Shipp were married in 1899. Carrie joined the U.S. Army for a three year term in 1900 when Minnie Blanche was pregnant with their first and only son Henry Burl. Carrie was shipped out to the Philipines to fight in the Spanish-American War. Minnie Blanche requested his discharge and the U.S. Army complied. The 1900 Federal census shows Carrie, Minnie Blanche and Henry Burl living with her father and other family members in Clark Township, Johnson County, Indiana. The 1910 Federal census shows Henry Burl still living with Minnie Blanche’s father in the same place but Carrie is remarried to Gertrude and living in California and Minnie Blanche’s whereabouts are unknown. What happened?

Stevens – H.B. Stevens Jr. sets out on his own

scan0002

This is Henry Burl Stevens Jr. He used to get mad when he got into trouble with his mother and always packed his little bag and threatened to run away. One day his mother set him and his suitcase outside the front gate and locked it. She said if you want to leave you can leave. He reportedly wailed outside the gate for some time before she would let him back in. He never threatened to run away again.
