The mention of Grover Beach in 1943 entry is the first time she’s talked about it in this diary. They would go on to build three houses there in 1950. The 1945 entry was sad. I’m sure the D.D. in the entry is Driving Drunk.

blackout(1)

In the 1942 entry Grama talks about having to go to bed early because they were supposed to be in blackout conditions. Wikipedia says “A blackout during war, or in preparation for an expected war, is the practice of collectively minimizing outdoor light, including upwardly directed (or reflected) light. This was done in the 20th century to prevent crews of enemy aircraft from being able to navigate to their targets simply by sight, for example during the London Blitz of 1940. In coastal regions, a shore-side blackout of city lights would also help protect ships from being seen in silhouette against the shore and attacked by enemy submarines farther out at sea hidden from view.”

Interesting entry for 1943. They had to get their tires inspected before they were able to buy new tires. In 1941 the Office of Price Administration (OPA) initiated the first of two rationing programs in aid of the war .This one limited the purchase of certain commodities, such as tires, cars, etc. For example, no one was able to have more than 5 tires and they had to show that they were in special need of them. Japanese occupations in the Far East had made it impossible to get rubber from plantations in the Dutch East Indies, and what little rubber was available went straight to airplane and munitions factories. Because no one had yet figured out how to make really high-quality artificial rubber, the OPA especially wanted to encourage people to care for the automobile tires they already had. In addition, Prices were “fixed” so that there would be no profiteering. We are all familiar with the other program which limited quantities of mostly foodstuff such as sugar, butter, etc. but gasoline and non-rubber shoes were in this program as well.

52 Ancestors 52 Weeks

52ancestors

The fourth week of the 52 Ancestors Challenge brings us to Joel John Chaudoin. He was my 2nd great grand uncle.

He is the brother of Amanda Metcalf Chaudoin, who was my 2nd great grandmother. They were two of the fourteen children of  Thomas Guthrie Chaudoin and his wife Martha Anna Pennick. Amanda was the mother of Thomas Lewis Coakley, who was the father of Georgia Mary Coakley, who was the mother of my father, Henry Burl Stevens Jr.

Joel John Coakley was born 26 January 1825 probably in Green County Kentucky. I know very little about him except that was the fourth child and third son and that he died in Ozark Missouri in 1901.
