Grama had a list of addresses in the front of the diary and for December 1942 she wrote down Gateway Auto Court in Santa Maria, California as their address. It looks like they’d been there since Sep 19th (moved there from Los Alamos, California) and would move on to Pismo Beach, California on December 26th. No wonder she wanted a house. She was tired of moving and tired of living in little auto courts.

1942 Post: Now we know where Bud was yesterday when they expected him for work. This must have been quite a shock to Grama and Grampa to have their boy volunteer for the military. He was 20 years old.

1943 Post: Bud is obviously away from home in Army training. Still safe but soon to be in the war.

I wonder what happened to Bud in the 1942 entry? Was he working with Grampa and didn’t show up for work? It doesn’t sound like he lived with them at this point. Maybe he just hadn’t checked in for a few days? In the 1943 entry it sounds like she still takes care of Marie’s clothes. Marie would be 19 at this point. Perhaps she is living where there is no facilities to wash clothes.

Correction – 25 Nov – Martha Marie Wright Tennant – Five Year Diary

I was stumped by the entry that referenced what I thought was Caso Blevens. “We had chicken dinner In tralor at Caso Blevens”. The handwriting was so tiny that I couldn’t see it very well. I think Grama solved the mystery herself. In another note jotted into the front cover of the diary is a list of their addresses and one of them was Casa Blanca Court in Santa Maria, California. That makes a lot more sense than Caso Blevens.

Nona is a name I am very familiar with. Nona and Leonard Harder were two close friends of Grama and Grampa. When I knew them they were living in Grover City near Grama and Grampa’s house. We called them Aunt Nona and Uncle Leonard even though they were not blood relatives. Of course, I did not know that at the time. I believe Leonard worked with Grampa off and on over the years.

Is she seriously reporting that the guys working the rig are drunk in the 1942 entry? No wonder work in the oil fields is so dangerous. I am wondering what L.B.V. is in the 1942 entry. Could it be the name of an oil field?
