1942 entry: Edgar Thomas Harder, born 11 June 1919 in Oklahoma, was the son of Grama and Grampa’s good friends, Leonard and Nona Harder. They were such good friends that we called them Aunt Nona and Uncle Leonard. I didn’t know they weren’t blood family until years later. This must have been a blow to the whole family. He actually died on Christmas Day. He must have been in the military overseas for them to get word so late. His enlistment records were interesting. He enlisted on 8 November 1941. He enlisted at March Field, Riverside California. He listed his occupation as Actor. He was single and was 6’1”, 159 lbs.

In the 1944 entry, Grama could be referencing her brother Arlis Eldo Wright who would have been 45 years old or his son Arlis E Wright who would have been 19 years old. They were both living in Porterville California in 1940. I’m thinking it must be the younger Arlis but, I can’t be sure without further research.

The move that is reported in the 1942 enty was to Alasta Court in Pismo Beach, California. They would stay there until March 16, 1943. They paid $10 in Santa Maria and only $8.50 in Pismo Beach. That is a 15% savings. I think most of us would appreciate a 15% savings in housing costs, wouldn’t we?

Tennant – Monongahela River

200px-Map_of_West_Virginia_highlighting_Monongalia_County.svg

Map of West Virginia highlighting Monongalia County.

In yesterday’s post I talked of how Richard  and Elizabeth Haught Tennant, along with some of her family migrated to Monongalia County. The county was named after the Monongahela River. Spelling was very fluid in these times so care was not taken to ensure exact spelling.

Where does the word Monongahela come from? The meaning of the word Monongahela has been stated many different ways. The Navigator, published in 1821, at Pittsburgh, says that it is an Indian word, meaning “the river of falling banks”. Another account makes it mean “the river of sliding banks.” Either way, I think we can be sure that it was named for its habit of the river cutting under its banks and eroding the nearby land.

Tennant – Tomahawk Claim

Tomakawk

Sylvia Rene Stevens (1948-Present)

to

Sylvia Marie Tennant (1924-2004) My mother

to

Robert Aubrey Tennant (1900-1981) My grandfather

to

William Thadius Tennant (1874-1935) My great grandfather

to

James F Tennant (1851-1934 My 2nd great grandfather

to

Peter Androus Tennant (1827-1887) My 3rd great grandfather

to

Peter Tennant (1773-1847) My 4th great grandfather

to

Richard Tennant (1751-1822) My 5th great grandfather

Richard Tennant is the subject of this post. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He immigrated to Philadelphia as an indentured servant. Upon arrival, Peter Haught bought his indentured servitude for seven years. Richard worked for Peter in a German settlement on the banks of the Potomac River for only two years of his seven year commitment when Peter released him. The reason becomes apparent to us when we see that Richard married Peter’s daughter Elizabeth some years later.

Richard and Elizabeth, with some members of her family eventually migrated to the wilderness of the Monongalia River Valley region of Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1775. There they “filed a tomohawk claim” on Jakes Run.

In The History of Monogalia County by Samuel T Wiley I read this interesting account of filing land claims in early Virginia. It seems that Virginia gave to every bona fide settler who built a log cabin and raised a crop of corn before 1778 a title to 400 acres of land and a pre-emption to an adjoining 1000 acres. Commissioners were appointed to give certificate of these “settlement rights.” In six months if no objection was offered, a patent was issued and the title was complete. Previous to this was a custom, not authorized in law, called “the tomahawk right.” A hunter would deaden a few trees around a spring and cut his name in the bark of others and then claim the land later on. Since the cost of the patent certificate was two shillings and six pence in addition to the cost of the settlement right of ten shillings per one hundred acres they may have had to wait until they had a crop or two in before they could file legally.
