1946 – No entry

In the 1942 entry Grama expresses the thought that they think they only have two more weeks of work on this field?/rig?. This seems to be an occupational hazard in the oil industry.  It must have been rough not knowing if you were going to have a job in the future or, if you had one, how long it would last.

In the 1944 entry she appears to be waiting for a letter from someone who she now guesses is not going to write. I wonder who that could be?

I Am My Own Grandpa

Many many years ago when I was twenty three,
I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter
Who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her,
And soon the two were wed.
This made my dad my son-in-law
And changed my very life.
My daughter was my mother,
For she was my father’s wife.

To complicate the matters worse,
Although it brought me joy,
I soon became the father
Of a bouncing baby boy.

My little baby then became
A brother-in-law to dad.
And so became my uncle,
Though it made me very sad.

For if he was my uncle,
Then that also made him brother
To the widow’s grown-up daughter
Who, of course, was my step-mother.

Father’s wife then had a son,
Who kept them on the run.
And he became my grandson,
For he was my daughter’s son.

My wife is now my mother’s mother
And it makes me blue.
Because, although she is my wife,
She’s my grandmother, too.

If my wife is my grandmother,
Then I am her grandchild.
And every time I think of it,
It simply drives me wild.

For now I have become
The strangest case you ever saw.
As the husband of my grandmother,
I am my own grandpa!

These are the lyrics to the song, I Am My Own Grandpa written by Dwight B. Latham and Moe Jaffe. I think I have some of these weird relationships in my family. lol

The 1943 entry is a rare moment when Grama let her sense of humor show in this diary.
It looks like that families in 1945 had to send safety equipment to their boys in the military just like families today.

to

Me, Sylvia Rene Stevens (daughter of Henry Burl Stevens Jr.)

William M Coakley was born on 15 January 1818 in Green County, Kentucky. He died on 5 October 1864 and was buried in the Thomas Coakley Cemetery in Green County. I have found a record of William M Coakley marrying Mary Jane Young in Sumner, Tennessee in 1851 but was it my William M Coakley? How did he get to Tennessee? In the 1860 Federal Census I found him again in Green County, Kentucky married to a woman named Mary J. That makes me a little more confident but then the question remains. How did he get to Tennessee to meet and then marry Mary Jane Young? A look at the map shows Sumner County, Tennessee right on the border with Kentucky. Only two Kentucky counties separate Sumner County Tennessee from Green County, Kentucky.

1943 –Dad & Bud worked I washed & took care of Donnie while Mrs Baird washed. Went To show tonight. The Navy Comes Through

1944 –Another Beautiful day But I am taking a cold. Daddy took Marie into Town She stayed for dinner We signed deed today

1945 –Slept late Had my hair fixed. Ray came by & he & Marie went to show Sure cold tonight. Froze the water facets

1946 – No entry

The movie referenced in 1943 was a 1942 release entitled “The Navy Comes Through”, starring Pat O’brien, George Murphy, and Jane Wyatt. The special effects were great for the time. For example, the art directors developed a special “sky and horizon” machine which created the effect of water motion against the horizon. All the sea shots were filmed on land using rocking arc lamps that projected waves on an acre of muslin. This must have been quite realistic for the 1943 audience.

I believe that last sentence in 1944 entry should be – We got deed to sign for property at 306 & 308. I wonder if they bought property. Or paid off property. Looks like I’ll have to do some more research.
